Coolah - A Working Town

Oct 2008-June 2010
"Coolah - A Working Town" - Chris Lloyd

In June 2010, Wiyanga delivered a report to the Coolah District Development Group Inc. on their potential economic development. The theme of the report ("A working town") highlights the core issues of maintenance of the existing agricultural and service base of the local economy.

Small rural towns face substantial challenges as their populations, private and commercial services and infrastructure are increasingly concentrated in larger population centres. This report looks at these issues and critically examines the strategies commonly employed to stop these trends.

Coolah is a part of the wider Warrumbungle Shire Council and the report has been passed to them for recommendations.

The report covers a range of areas including:
• Agricultural production in the context of climate change and an aging farm workforce
• Demographic change in the district and its implications for aged care services
• A realistic appraisal of tourism's potential contribution to the economy and a specific examination of the ‘grey nomad' cohort and their needs and interests.

The report also contains a series of worked examples of the sorts of developments which might flow from the report analysis. Typical of this is the idea of the Coolah's Spine Walking Trail which aims draw in the working as well as heritage parts of a rural town.
